The Conditions to All God’s Promises
To His chosen People
Covenant – an agreement between two parties
“A covenant is an agreement between parties, based upon conditions.” Signs of the Times 12-22-81
“Ye stand this day all of you… that thou shouldest enter into covenant with the LORD thy God, and into his oath, which the LORD thy God maketh with thee this day” Deuteronomy 29:10, 12
“And the king …made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the Lord, and keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all [their] heart and all [their] soul…And all the people stood to the covenant.” 2 Kings 23:3
God’s Covenant (agreement) to us—“You will be My People”
“And the LORD hath avouched thee this day to be his peculiar people, as he hath promised thee and that [thou] shouldest keep all his commandments; Deuteronomy 26:18 “God chose Israel as his people, and gave them gracious promises on condition of obedience.” Signs of the Times 10-15-96
“I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee…and I will be their God.” Genesis 17:7, 8
Our Covenant (agreement) to God—“We will Obey”
“And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient.” Exodus 24:7
“Thou hast avouched the LORD this day to be thy God, and to walk in his ways, and to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and to hearken unto his voice.” Deuteronomy 26:17
Obedience – the Condition to be “God’s people”
“Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you…” Jeremiah 7:23
“If Israel would obey the divine law and thus fulfill the conditions of their covenant with God, he would verify his promises to them.” Signs of the Times 12-22-81
“Now there fore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people…” Exodus 19:5
“Obey my voice…. according to all which I command you: so shall ye be my people, and I will be your God” Jeremiah 11:4
“God’s favor toward Israel had always been conditional on their obedience. At the foot of Sinai they had entered into covenant relationship with Him as His “peculiar treasure…above all people.” Solemnly they had promised to follow in the path of obedience. “All that the Lord hath spoken we will do,” At the ratification of the covenant, the people had once more united in declaring, “All that the Lord hath said will we do, and be obedient,” Exodus 24:3, 7. God had chosen Israel as His people, and they had chosen Him as their King.” Prophets and Kings 293
Disobedience Breaks the contract “to be God’s people”
“Three days the people were before the mount… God had given them his gracious promise that they should become a peculiar treasure unto him, on condition of obedience; but if they were disobedient he would reject them, and choose another people.” Signs of the Times 4-22-80
God cannot fulfill His promise – to a disobedient people
“Although the Lord gave Israel the greatest evidences of his favor, and upon condition of obedience, the rich promise that they should be to him a peculiar people, a royal nation, yet because of their unbelief and disobedience he could not fulfill the promise.” Signs of the Times 3-27-84
“God had told them if they did not keep his commandments, he could not fulfill his covenant of promise, for this covenant was to be fulfilled only upon condition of obedience.” Signs of the Times 1-24-95
God’s Covenant – has both Blessings & Cures
“All through the inspired history are exalted blessings promised upon the people of God on conditions of obedience, and curses threatened for disobedience.” 4a Spiritual Gifts 122 “Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse; A blessing, if ye obey…And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God…” Deuteronomy 11:26-28
“See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil…But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear…I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish…I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, [that] I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:” Deuteronomy 30:15-19
God’s Covenant – “I will Bless you if you Obey”
Fruitful – Latter Rain will fill the church
“If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit…and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely.” Leviticus 26:3-5
Peace, No fear – No enemies in the land
“…I will give peace in the land…and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land. And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight…” Leviticus 26:6-8
God will dwell in the church—and the church “shall be My People”
“For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you…And I will set my tabernacle among you…And I will walk among you and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.” Leviticus 26:9-12
God’s Covenant - “I will Curse you if you Disobey”
“But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments; And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant: I also will do this unto you…” Leviticus 26:14-16
No Peace, Fear, lack of understanding, leaders of unrighteousness
“…I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you” Leviticus 26:16-17
No latter Rain – no Spirit, no Power, no fruit, no victory
“And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you…I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass: And your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits.” Leviticus 26:18-20
Children Destroyed – new members are few
“And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me…I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your [high] ways shall be desolate.” Leviticus 26:21-22
Sword, Pestilence – Word of God is lost
“And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me; Then will I also walk contrary unto you…And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of [my] covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. [And] when I have broken the staff of your bread…ye shall eat, and not be satisfied.” Leviticus 26:23-26
Desolation – Cast out of your land
“And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me; Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times…And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcasses upon the carcasses of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you. And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet odours. And I will bring the land into desolation: and your enemies which dwell therein shall be astonished at it. And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste.” Leviticus 26:27-33
Disobedience – Changes Blessings to Curses
“…if his efforts to warn and reprove are not heeded, his forbearance and compassion will be changed to severity and judgment.” Review and Herald 1-11-81
“The Lord will test the faith of His people; He will send rebukes, which will be followed by afflictions if these warnings are not heeded.” 4 Testimonies 254
“If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings…” Malachi 2:2
God is faithful to keep His Promises
“Promises are estimated by the truth of the one who makes them. Many men make promises only to break them…But God is behind the promises he makes. …his truth endures to all generations.” Youth's Instructor 2-15-
“Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;” Deuteronomy 7:9
“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise…” 2 Peter 3:9
God will keep His Covenant – to bless the obedient
“…it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to these judgments, and keep, and do them, that the LORD thy God shall keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy which he sware unto thy fathers:” Deuteronomy 7:12
“Blessed [be] the LORD, that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised: there hath not failed one word of all his good promise…” 1 Kings 8:56
God will keep His Covenant – to Curse the Disobedient
“As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.” Deuteronomy 8:20
“…all nations shall say, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of this great anger? Then men shall say, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt:… And the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this book:” Deuteronomy 29:24, 25, 27
The Condition to All God’s Promises
God’s Promises are All Conditional
“To every promise of God there are conditions.” Review and Herald 12-24-08 “All the promises of God are on condition of obedience…” LYL 83 “It should be remembered that the promises and threatenings of God are alike conditional.” 7 Bible Commentary 729 “God…has made precious promises to His children on condition of faithful obedience to His precepts.” TMK 224 “All His gifts are promised on condition of obedience.” Christ's Object Lessons 145
Only the Obedient – can claim God’s promises
“Upon what ground may we claim the full and rich promises of God? We can claim them only when we have fulfilled the conditions prescribed in his word.” Review and Herald 12-17-89 “The promises of God…are for those who walk in the light of his holy word. Those who do his will may claim all the benefits the Lord has promised.” Signs of the Times 3-31-90. Whoever will, in the strength of Christ, comply with the conditions, may claim these promises, with all their wealth of blessing, as his own.” Sons and Daughters of God 327.
“There are many in our world who do not keep the commandments of God…and yet they claim all his blessings. They are willing to accept and appropriate his promises, without heeding the conditions upon which they are based. They have no right to the blessings they claim.” Review and Herald 2-26-89 “Those who bring their petitions to God, claiming His promise while they do not comply with the conditions, insult Jehovah. They bring the name of Christ as their authority for the fulfillment of the promise, but they do not those things that would show faith in Christ and love for Him.” Christ's Object Lessons 143. “We need to closely examine the deed of trust wherewith we approach God. If we are disobedient, we bring to the Lord a note to be cashed, when we have not fulfilled our part of the contract. We complain that our check is not honored, when it is a forged check. We approach God with His promises, and ask Him to fulfill them, when by so doing He would dishonor His name.” Signs of the Times 3-15-99 “We have no right to claim the promises of God till we comply with the conditions revealed in His Word.” TMK 313
Breaks/forfeits the Contract
“The children of Israel forfeited the divine favor by their disobedience.” Signs of the Times 7-22-86. “…they transgressed the law, and broke the covenant of God.” 11 Manuscript Releases 373. “They had utterly failed to keep their promise of obedience to God, and this released Him from the covenant that they had so repeatedly violated.” 2 Testimonies 152
“By their failure to carry out His purpose, they made it impossible for Him to fulfill to them His promise of blessing.” Christ's Object Lessons 303.
“Although the Lord gave Israel…the rich promise that they should be to him a peculiar people, a royal nation, yet because of their unbelief and disobedience he could not fulfill the promise.” Signs of the Times 3-27-84 “God had plainly stated this to them. If they did not keep his commandments, he would not—he could not—fulfill the rich promises which were given them on condition of obedience.” Signs of the Times 5-13-86
“Jesus saw His church…A backsliding church…God did not forsake them, or suffer His faithfulness to fail; but they departed from Him, and separated themselves from His love. As they refused to comply with the conditions, His promises were not fulfilled to them.” Great Controversy 1888, 315
Promises – God could not fulfill
“The Lord promised the children of Israel: “Ye shall see the altering of my purpose” [Numbers 14:34]. 15 Manuscript Releases 292. “your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you.” Jeremiah 5:25
“Because of the sins of Israel, the calamity which God said should come upon the temple if his people departed from him, was fulfilled…God promised Solomon, if he would remain faithful, and his people would obey all his commandments, that that glorious temple should stand forever in all its splendor…” 1 Spirit of Prophecy 414.
“Thus saith the Lord…If those ordinances [sun, moon & stars] depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever. Thus saith the LORD; if heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD.” Jeremiah 31:35-37
“The promise had been made that the house of Aaron should walk before God forever; but these promises had been made on condition that they devoted themselves to the work of the sanctuary with singleness of heart, and honored God in all their ways…Eli and his sons had been tested, and the Lord found them wholly unworthy of the exalted position of priests in his service. And God declared, “Be it far from me.” He could not carry out the good that he had meant to do them, because they failed to do their part.” Signs of the Times 4-6-88.
God withdraws His threat – Nineveh is saved
“It should be remembered that the promises and the threatenings of God are alike conditional.” Evangelism 695.
“All His promises are made upon condition of faith and obedience, and a failure to comply with His commands cuts off the fulfillment to us of the rich provisions of the Scriptures.” Patriarchs and Prophets 621. “There is no safety for the people of God except in implicit obedience to his word. All his promises are made upon conditions of faith and obedience, and failure to comply with the expressed commands necessitates the failure of your experiencing the fulfillment of the rich provisions of the Scriptures.” Signs of the Times 5-11-88.
of a Broken Contract
“The teachers of the nation…led the people to believe that God would stretch out his arm in their behalf according to his promise, while they did not comply with the conditions of that promise.” Review and Herald 8-29-99.
Under the Wrath of God – Leaders claim “God will save his people”
“The worshipers were stricken down before the altar, and the sanctuary was polluted with the bodies of the slain. Yet in their blind and blasphemous presumption the instigators of this hellish work publicly declared that they had no fear that Jerusalem would be destroyed, for it was God’s own city. To establish their power more firmly, they bribed false prophets to proclaim, even when Roman legions were besieging the temple, that the people were to wait for deliverance from God. To the last, multitudes held fast to the belief that the Most High would interpose for the defeat of their adversaries. But Israel had spurned the divine protection, and now she had no defense.” 4 Spirit of Prophecy 30
Presumption – claims promises without obedience
“…presumption is Satan's counterfeit of faith. Faith claims God's promises, and brings forth fruit in obedience. Presumption also claims the promises, but uses them…to excuse transgression…Faith would have led our first parents to trust the love of God and to obey His commands. Presumption led them to transgress His law, believing that His great love would save them from the consequence of their sin.” Desire of Ages 126
“Many who claim to be sanctified…are boldly presumptuous, and, while disobeying the words of Christ, yet dare to appropriate the promises given to the loyal and obedient. They have no right to one of the promises of God, because they do not fulfill the conditions upon which the promises are to be fulfilled. …their presumptuous assurance is not faith. Signs of the Times 2-28-95.
“…the word of God is against this ensnaring doctrine of faith without works. It is not faith that claims the favor of Heaven without complying with the conditions upon which mercy is to be granted, it is presumption…” Great Controversy 472.
“If we choose to disobey His commandments, we may cry, “Faith, faith, only have faith,” and the response will come back from the sure Word of God, ‘Faith without works is dead’ (James 2:20).” Faith and Works 47.
Claims promises – without fulfilling the conditions
“…many who claim sanctification refuse to comply with the conditions upon which the promises are made, and yet they presume to expect the blessing that God has promised to the obedient.” Review and Herald 9-3-1.
“If you are disobedient, and yet plead the promises of God, you bring to him a note to be cashed when you have not fulfilled your part of the contract. You complain that your check is not honored, when it is a forgery. Thus it is with those who bring the name of Christ as their authority for the fulfillment of the promise, when they have not done those things by which they show their love for Christ and their faith in him. Let it not be forgotten that those who bring their petitions to God, claiming his promises, while they do not comply with the conditions, insult Jehovah.” The Southern Work 6-4-3.
To Spiritual Israel
“The Jews had deceived themselves by misinterpreting the words of the Lord through his prophets, of his eternal favor to his people Israel…And because God had shown them so great favor and mercy, they flattered themselves that, notwithstanding their sins and iniquities, he would still retain them as his favored people, and shower special blessings upon them. They misapplied the words of Jeremiah, and depended for their salvation upon being called the children of Abraham…This has been the danger of the people of God in all ages; and especially is this the danger of those living near the close of time.” 2 Spirit of Prophecy 52, 53
“The Jews had misinterpreted God’s promise of eternal favor to Israel…The Jews regarded their natural descent from Abraham as giving them a claim to this promise. But they overlooked the conditions which God had specified.” Desire of Ages 106
Church says – “We have the promise of Abraham (Ellen G. White)”
“They put their dependence in the fact that they were children of Abraham. “We be Abraham’s seed,” they said proudly. (John 8:33.) When the crisis came, it was revealed that they had divorced themselves from God…” Christ's Object Lessons 106
God rejects Israel – chooses another people
“God had given them his gracious promise [at Mt. Sinai], that they should become a peculiar treasure unto him, on condition of obedience; but if they were disobedient he would reject them, and choose another people.” Signs of the Times 4-22-80 “When the Jewish people rejected Christ, the Prince of life, He took from them the kingdom of God and gave it unto the Gentiles. God will continue to work on this principle… When a church proves unfaithful to the word of the Lord, whatever their position may be, however high and sacred their calling, the Lord can no longer work with them. Others are then chosen…” 14 Manuscript Releases 102.
“Because they failed of fulfilling God’s purpose, the children of Israel were set aside, and God’s call was extended to other peoples. If these too prove unfaithful, will they not in like manner be rejected?” Christ's Object Lessons 304, 305 “The Lord promised the children of Israel: “Ye shall see the altering of my purpose” [Num. 14-34] 15 Manuscript Releases 292
Physical church – (refuses to obey) ceases to be God’s people
“Considerest thou not what this people have spoken, saying The two families which the LORD hath chosen, he hath even cast them off? thus they have despised my people, that they should be no more a nation before them.” Jeremiah 33:24
“…think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.” Matthew 3:9
“John…condemned their hypocrisy. He told them that they had not fulfilled the conditions of the covenant on their part, which would entitle them to the promises God made to a faithful and obedient people. Their proud boasts of being children of Abraham did not make them really such…Their wicked works had disqualified them to claim the promises God made to the children of Abraham. John assured them that God would raise up children unto Abraham from the very stones, to whom he could fulfill his promise, rather than to depend on the natural children of Abraham who had neglected the light God had given them, and had become hardened by selfish ambition and wicked unbelief. He told them that if they were really the children of Abraham, they would do the works of their father Abraham. They would have Abraham’s faith, love, and obedience. But they did not bear this fruit. They had no claim to Abraham as their father, or the promises God made to the seed of Abraham.” 2 Spirit of Prophecy 51
Spiritual church – takes the place of the physical
“John knew that they cherished the idea that, because they were of the seed of Abraham, they were securely established in the favor of God…The prophet faithfully presented to them the ability of God to raise up those who would take their place, and would become more worthy children of Abraham. He told them plainly that God was not dependent upon them to fulfill his purpose, for he could provide ways and means independent of them, to carry forward his great work…” 1 Red 37
Jesus taught – Spiritual church supersedes the physical
“Christ declares that lineal connection is superseded by spiritual connection. The Jews were indeed Abraham’s seed according to the flesh, but they manifested a spirit very different from the spirit of righteous Abraham. By their unbelief and persistent rejection of truth they disinherited themselves…By their works the Jews showed that they bore no real relationship to Abraham.” Signs of the Times 8-29-
“They [Jews] answered him, We be Abraham’s seed…Jesus answered…I know that ye are Abraham’s seed…” John 8:33-37
“Jesus says “…ye do that which ye have seen with your father. They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham…Ye do the deeds of your father…Ye are of your father the devil…” John 8:38-44
“When the Jews were claiming Abraham for their father, while not doing the works of Abraham, Jesus said to them: “Ye are of your father the devil…” Signs of the Times 6-11-94
“Christ recognized no virtue in lineage. He taught that spiritual connection supersedes all natural connection. The Jews claimed to have descended from Abraham; but by failing to do the works of Abraham, they proved that they were not his true children. Only those who prove themselves to be spiritually in harmony with Abraham by obeying the voice of God, are reckoned as of true descent.” Christ's Object Lessons 268
The True Chosen People of God “are one inwardly,” spiritually.
“Christ’s denunciation of the Jews is a lesson for us. “”For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: but he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit…” Youth's Instructor 9-24-96
God’s True Church
“If ye were Abraham’s children [true church], ye would so the works of Abraham.” John 8:39. “Abraham obeyed My voice, and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.” Genesis 26:5
“These truths, as presented in Revelation 14, in connection with the “everlasting gospel,” will distinguish the church of Christ at the time of his appearing… “Here are they that keep the Commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” Great Controversy, 88, 453.
Faith &Obedience makes us the True Children of God.
“The past fifty years have not dimmed one jot or principle of our faith…the foundation principles that have made us what we are—Children of God, keeping the commandments of God and having the faith of Jesus.” UL 352. “Commandment-keeping children occupy a peculiar, exalted position. John viewed them in holy vision and thus described them: “Here are they that keep the Commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” 2 Testimonies 450
“The message for this time is not, ‘The temple
of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the [true/physical] temple of the
Lord are we.’ Whom does the Lord receive as vessels unto
honor?—Those who co-operate with Christ; those who believe the truth, who
live the truth, who proclaim the truth in all its bearings.” Review
and Herald 10-22-03
God’s Promise to His True Church
“Precious promises are made to God’s people, upon condition of obedience.” PH 097 1 “We cannot enjoy the favor of God unless we comply with the conditions…If you would, as a church, secure the rich blessing of God, you must individually make Him first and last and best in every thought, plan, and work. Obedience to God is the first duty of the Christian..” 4 Testimonies 610
“If we comply with the conditions God laid down for Israel…we shall receive the blessings that God promised to them. God sends His Word to assure us that if we will be obedient to Him, He will acknowledge us as members of His royal family. He will honor His peculiar people above all nations.” I Manuscript Releases 108
“The history of Israel should be to us a most solemn warning of the calamities that will overtake us if we are disobedient to God’s commandments. “Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward; how shall we escape…” “To-day the Christian world looks upon the Jews as a people who are under the divine curse because of their rejection and crucifixion of Christ. But, instead of looking upon them as sinners above all others, they should seek to learn a lesson from their condition, and inquire why it is that the judgment of God fell upon them in so signal a manner.” Signs of the Times 1-24-1895.
“Upon what ground may we claim
the full and rich promises of God?
…can he [man[ expect that the Lord
will fulfill a promise made on conditions
that have never been kept?” RH 12-17-89
Special Promises to His chosen people are conditional
“God would in no wise excuse sin in a people who had been enlightened, even if he had, in their days of faithfulness and purity, loved them, and given them especial promises. These promises and blessings were always upon condition of obedience upon their part.” 2 Spirit of Prophecy 54
“Although the Lord gave Israel the greatest evidences of his favor, and upon condition of obedience, the rich promise that they should be to him a peculiar people, a royal nation, yet because of their unbelief and disobedience he could not fulfill the promise. Because of their transgressions, he removed his restraining power over their enemies, the ungodly nations around them, and did not protect them as he had done.” Signs of the Times 3-27-84
“He [Christ] then gives them the parable of the fig-tree, thus impressing upon them the fact that natural endowments, national blessings, and religious privileges greatly increase individual responsibility. They had taken it for granted that their superior advantages, and the favors they had received from God, gave them a right to claim all the blessings he had promised to the faithful on condition of obedience…But after he [God] has waited patiently year after year, and been disappointed, the commandment is given, as to the barren tree, ‘Cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?’” Review and Herald 1-12-86
“In this parable [of the vineyard] Christ presented the true condition of the once chosen people of God. He revealed to them their sinful breach of trust. He designed this parable to be a lesson to all, warning them that unless they walk in the ways of the Lord, keeping all His commandments, He can not bless and sustain them. The church on earth is greatly beloved by God…But the Lord will not serve with the sins of His people…He willingly forgives those who repent, but He will remove His favor from those who go on sinning, exalting self, and mingling the sacred with the common. Terrible judgments will destroy those who have misrepresented Him, saying, ‘The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, are these,’ when their example is misleading.” Signs of the Times 10-31-1900.
God’s Favor to His Church
“In this our day God’s people will prosper only so long as they keep his precepts…” Review and Herald 9-14-05. “We cannot enjoy the favor of God unless we comply with the conditions upon which His favor is bestowed. 4 Testimonies 610.
National favor depends on obedience not promises
“Obedience was the only condition upon which ancient Israel was to receive the fulfillment of the promises which made them the highly favored people of God; and obedience to that law will bring as great blessings to individuals and nations now as it would have brought to the Hebrews.” 1 Selected Messages 218 “…the path of obedience alone was the safety for them either as individuals or as a nation; for nothing but obedience would secure the divine favor…” Signs of the Times 5-13-86
“The conditions and promises are the same in the Old Testament as they are in the New. The favor of God is promised only to those who obey him…In our faithful performance of his requirements, consists our prosperity as a church and as individuals.” Signs of the Times 1-6-1888. “The prosperity of God’s people is dependent on their obedience.” KC 148
“…they deceived themselves with the vain supposition that eternal blessings were theirs by virtue of the promises made to Abraham…” 2 Spirit of Prophecy 75. “When Christ came to the world…The teachers of the nation interpreted the Scriptures according to their cherished ideas…They led the people to believe that God would stretch out his arm in their behalf according to his promise, while they did not comply with the conditions of that promise.” Review and Herald 8-29-1899. “Filled with pride, they regarded themselves as the chosen and favored people of God; yet they did not serve or worship God. They put their dependence in the fact that they were children of Abraham…When the crisis came, it was revealed that they had divorced themselves from God, and had placed their trust in Abraham, as if he were God.” Christ's Object Lessons 267
Disobedience – breaks contract to the God’s True Church
“God had told them if they did not keep his commandments, he could not fulfill his covenant of promise, for this covenant was to be fulfilled only upon condition of obedience. The history of Israel should be to us a most solemn warning of the calamities that will overtake us if we are disobedient to God’s commandments.” Signs of the Times 1-24-95. All His promises are made upon condition of faith and obedience, and a failure to comply with His commands cuts off the fulfillment to us of the rich provisions of the Scriptures.” Patriarchs and Prophets 621.
“When the destroying angel was about to pass through the land of Egypt…Suppose an Israelite had neglected to place the sign of blood upon his door, saying that the angel of God would be able to distinguish between the Hebrews and the Egyptians; would the heavenly sentinels have stood to guard that dwelling? We should take this lesson to ourselves. Again the destroying angel is to pass through the land. There is to be a mark placed upon God’s people, and that mark is the keeping of his holy Sabbath. We are not to follow our own will and judgment, and flatter ourselves that God will come to our terms… To those who comply with the conditions, his promises will be fulfilled; but all that venture to depart from his instructions, to follow a way of their own choosing, will perish with the wicked…” HS 217
Blessings & Curses Promised to God’s True Church
Modern Israel are in greater danger of forgetting God and being led into idolatry than were His ancient people…God especially charged His ancient people to guard against idolatry, for if they should be led away from serving the living God, His curse would rest upon them, while if they would love Him with all their heart, with all their soul, and with all their might, He would abundantly bless them…A blessing or a curse is now before the people of God—a blessing if they come out from the world and are separate, and walk in the path of humble obedience; and a curse if they unite with the idolatrous…” 1 Testimonies 609 “All through the inspired history are exalted blessings promised upon the people of God on conditions of obedience, and curses threatened for disobedience.” 4a Spiritual Gifts 122 “…I set before you this day a blessing and a curse; A blessing, if ye obey…And a curse, if ye will not obey…” Deuteronomy 11:26-28
Obedience – Blessings
“God will soon do great things for us if we lie humble and believing at His feet…More than one thousand will soon be converted in one day…” Review and Herald 11-10-85. “The church may appear as about to fall, but it does not fall. It remains, while the sinners in Zion will be sifted out—the chaff separated from the precious wheat.” 2 Selected Messages 380.
Disobedience – Curses
“The history of Israel should be to us a most solemn warning of the calamities that will overtake us if we are disobedient…” Signs of the Times 1-24-95. “The sins and iniquities of rebellious Israel are recorded…as a warning that if we imitate their example of transgression and depart from God we shall fall as surely as did they.” 1 Testimonies 609. “If the church pursue a course similar to that of the world, they will share the same fate.” 5 Testimonies 100
“One leak will sink the mightiest vessel that ever rode the proud ocean; so will the church make shipwreck amid the perils of these last days unless the holy Captain of her salvation shall not only serve as Captain but Pilot.” 1888, 919
“The work that God desires to see done by His people is not done. Unless there is a decided change, the people will accept as truth that which is not truth.” Review and Herald 5-26-3. “If most earnest vigilance is not manifested at the great heart of the work to protect the interests of the cause, the church will become as corrupt as the churches of other denominations.” 4 Testimonies 513
If disobedient – Christ leaves the church
If the church refuses to hear the voice of the heavenly merchantman, refuses to open the door, then Christ will pass on, and it will be left destitute of His presence, destitute of true riches, but saying in self-righteousness. “I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing.” 1888, 415
“…God will remove His prospering hand from the conference. Shall the Ark of the Covenant be removed from this people? Shall idols be smuggled in? Shall false principles and false precepts be brought into the sanctuary? Shall antichrist be respected? Shall the true doctrines and principles given us by God, which have made us what we are, be ignored? Shall God’s instrumentality, the publishing house, become a mere political, worldly institution? This is directly where the enemy, through blinded, unconsecrated men, is leading us.” CW 95
“Extraordinary power from God must take hold of our churches. Reconversion must take place among the members…Renewed, purified, sanctified, the church must be, else the wrath of God will fall upon them with much greater power than upon those who have never professed to be saints.” LHU 301. “The same danger exists today among the people who profess to be the depositaries of God’s law. They are too apt to flatter themselves that the regard in which they hold the commandments will preserve them from the power of divine justice…A sin-hating God calls upon those who profess to keep His law to depart from all iniquity. Neglect to repent and obey His word will bring as serious consequences upon God’s people today as did the same sin upon ancient Israel.” 4 Testimonies 166, 167.
“God brings against ministers and people the heavy charge of spiritual feebleness, saying, “…because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of my mouth…” (Revelation 3:15-18). God calls for a spiritual revival and a spiritual reformation. Unless this takes place, those who are lukewarm will continue to grow more abhorrent to the Lord, until He will refuse to acknowledge them as His children.” 1 Selected Messages, 127
“Now, if God has ever spoken by me, unless there is a reformation in our institutions, unless there is a reformation all through our churches, unless your eyes are opened by the baptism of the Holy Ghost, you will be lost just as surely as was Judas. You would sell your Lord just as readily as Judas sold Him… 1SAT 175
“There is an alarming condition of things in our churches says the word of God, ‘your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you…An now because ye have done all these works, saith the Lord, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not; therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name…as I have done to Shiloh, and I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren.’ God will surely fulfill His word to those who will not hear, will not see and refuse the light which he sends them.” 1888, 409
“Light has been given me that if the Lord's people do not strive more earnestly to make the truth of the Word of God more widely known, the Lord will raise up other instruments, who, in the spirit of John the Baptist, will do His work.” 18 Manuscript Releases 144.
By their [Israelites] failure to carry out His purpose, they made it impossible for Him to fulfill to them His promise of blessing. Is not the church of today doing the same thing?... Because they failed of fulfilling God's purpose, the children of Israel were set aside, and God's call was extended to other peoples. If these also prove unfaithful, will they not in like manner be rejected? The glorious possibilities set before Israel could be realized only through obedience to God’s commandments. The same elevation of character, the same fullness of blessing...is possible for us only through obedience. The words of God to ancient Israel have a solemn warning to the church and its leaders today...Shall the warnings from God be passed by unheeded? Will they reject God’s word as the Jewish leaders rejected Christ? The result of Israel's sin is before us. Will the church of today take warning? Christ's Object Lessons 303-306
"The solemn testimony upon which the destiny of the church hangs has been lightly esteemed, if not entirely disregarded." IT 181
"The character and prospects of the people of God are similar to those of the Jews, who could not enter in because of unbelief…The apostle exhorts us, “if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.” 1888, 406. “God never forsakes people or individuals until they forsake Him...Internal corruption will bring the denunciations of God upon this people as it did upon Jerusalem. Oh, let pleading voices, let earnest prayer be heard, that those who preach to others shall not themselves be castaways. My brethren, we know not what is before us and our only safety is in following the Light of the world. God will work with us and for us [only] if the sins which brought His wrath upon the old world...do not become our crime.” 12 Manuscript Releases, 321.
"Conviction and thorough repentance was required of ancient Israel in order to meet the standard of God. No less does God require of his people in our day. There must be genuine heart work in repentance and humiliation, in order to come under this covenant care..." Signs of the Times 5-27-80
"The vision given to Isaiah represents the condition of God's people in the last days.... As they look by faith into the holy of holies, and see the work of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary, they perceive that they are a people of unclean lips... But if they, like Isaiah, will receive the impression the Lord designs shall be made upon the heart, if they will humble their souls before God, there is hope for them. Review and Herald 12-22-96
"The only hope for our churches today is to repent and do their first work." 1888, 1020.
“...when holy hands bear the ark no longer, woe will be upon the people.... Oh, that our people may, as did Nineveh, repent with all their might and believe with all their heart, that God may turn away his fierce anger from them.” PHI 17 60
“When Josiah heard the words of warning and condemnation because Israel had trampled upon the precepts of heaven, he humbled himself. He wept before the Lord. He made a thorough work of repentance and reformation, and God accepted his efforts. The whole congregation of Israel entered into a solemn covenant to keep the commandments of Jehovah. This is our work today. We must repent of the past evil of our doings, and seek God with all our hearts.” Review and Herald 1-31-88.
"The history of God's ancient people is full of instruction for the church of today.... It would be a scene well-pleasing to God and angels, would his professed followers in this generation unite, as did Israel of old, in a solemn covenant to "observe and do all the commandments of the Lord..." SW 6-7-4.
"The people were eager to obtain a settlement in Canaan; as yet they had no homes or lands for their families... but this important work must be deferred, for a higher duty demanded their first attention. Before taking possession of their inheritance, they must renew their covenant of loyalty to God. In....a convocation of the tribes upon Mounts Ebal and Gerizim, at Shechem, for the solemn recognition of the law of God. ...the whole people, not only men, but ‘the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them’ left their camp at Gilgal...Silence was proclaimed by the sound of the signal trumpet; and then in the deep stillness, and in the presence of this vast assembly, Joshua, standing beside the sacred ark, read the blessings that were to follow obedience to God’s law. All the tribes on Gerizim responded by an Amen. He then read the curses, and the tribes on Ebal in like manner gave their assent, thousands upon thousands of voices uniting as the voice of one man in the solemn response. Following this came the reading of the law of God, together with the statutes and judgments..." (Patriarchs and Prophets continued)
“Israel had received the law directly from the mouth of God at Sinai; and its sacred precepts, written by His own hand....Now it had been again written where all could read it. All had the privilege of seeing for themselves the conditions of the covenant under which they were to hold possession of Canaan. All were to signify their acceptance of the terms of the covenant and give their assent to the blessings or curses for its observance or neglect. The law was not only written upon the memorial stones, but was read by Joshua himself in the hearing of all Israel...Not alone the men of Israel, but ‘all the women and the little ones’ listened to the reading of the law; for it was important that they also should know and do their duty.” Patriarchs and Prophets, 499-503.
“Under the labors of Ezra and Nehemiah, the people of Judah had in the most solemn and public manner pledged themselves to render obedience to the law of God.” Signs of the Times 1-17-84.
“Before there could be any hope of prosperity for Israel they must be led to repentance before God. ...led to see and confess the very sin of which they had been guilty.” Patriarchs and Prophets 614. “The very sin of which they were convicted, had to be confessed.” Signs of the Times 3-16-88.
“...the leaders of the congregation presented the history of Israel, showing God's great benefits and their ingratitude. Tracing the record from the days of Abraham...they recounted the mighty manifestations of his power in their deliverance from bondage in Egypt, and showed also how backsliding and apostasy had caused the blessing of the Lord to be withdrawn from Israel.” Signs of the Times 1-10-84. “Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works...” How much need there is for the people of God at this time to... carefully review the ground over which they have traveled, and see and understand where the very first step was taken in the wrong path!" Review and Herald 6-7-87. “Whatever the neglect of duty... let it now be understood and repented of. If we have sinned against the Lord, we shall never have peace and restoration to his favor without full confession and reformation in regard to the very things in which we have been remiss. " Review and Herald 11, 19-14.
“As they [Israel] had from day to day listened to the words of the law, they had been deeply convicted of their own transgressions, and also of the sins of their nation in past generations.... And they now determined to seek God's mercy, and to pledge themselves to walk hereafter in his commandments...The people prostrated themselves before the Lord, humbly confessing their sins and pleading for mercy and pardon, each for himself individually and for the entire congregation. Signs of the Times, 1-10-84.
"If his people have not obeyed his requirements, they stand condemned according to their delinquencies. What, then, is required of the church...? Humiliation, confession, and true, genuine repentance before God... I tell you, God calls for repentance and confessions from his people; and those who have taken an active part in bringing the church into her present position, will never come to the light only by humble confessions and a sincere repentance before God, and working to bring them to the light." PH155 4
“When those in our churches commit sins, they should repent of them before God, and they should also repent of them before their brethren...” RH 5-18-05 "Secret sins are to be confessed in secret to God; but, for open sin, open confession is required. The reproach of the disciple's sin is cast upon Christ. It causes...wavering souls to stumble. By giving proof of repentance, the disciple, so far as lies in his power, is to remove this reproach." DA 811. "In the spirit of deep repentance confess your past neglect in the assembly of God's people, as they meet to worship God. Then the Lord will pardon your transgressions...” AUCR 3-11-7. “All the people had the opportunity of demonstrating their repentance, and thus saving their lives. “Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the Lord's side? let him come unto me...All were given the opportunity to be loyal to God...But in the very presence of God many refused to repent.” Review and Herald 2-11-09.
“When the book of the law was found in the house of the Lord...it was read before Josiah the king. And he rent his garments...He called together all the men of Israel, and the words of the book were read in the hearing of the congregation. The sin of the rulers and the people was pointed out, and the king stood up before them, and confessed his transgression. He manifested his repentance, and made a covenant to keep the statutes of the Lord with his whole heart. Josiah did not rest until the people did all they could to return from their backsliding, and serve the living God." RC 57 “It was not sorrow for sin, but fear of its penalty, that actuated the king of Israel as he entreated Samuel, “I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord." If Saul had had true repentance, he would have made public confession of his sin...” Patriarchs and Prophets 631.
“The path of confession is humiliating, but it is the only way by which we can receive strength to overcome.” Review and Herald 11-19-14. “If those whose errors are pointed out make confession of their wrong-doing, the spell of the enemy may be broken. If they will repent and forsake their sins, God is faithful and just to forgive their sins, and to cleanse them from all unrighteousness.” PH1 167 “Others, with tears, all broken in heart, made confession to those whom they had bruised and wounded. They did not think of maintaining their own dignity, but asked at every step, ‘What must I do to be saved?’ The answer was, ‘Repent, and be converted...’” Review and Herald 12-6-6.
“If they [leaders] are too proud to repent and confess their errors, to turn to God, welcoming His salvation and seeking His favor, the Lord will remove His light from them and will leave them to walk in the way they have chosen.” TDG 55 “Those who, when reproved by God, stop to reason in regard to the possible humiliation to result from confession and repentance, will never, never travel the narrow path or enter the strait gate.” SpTBO7 26
“In passing on and refusing to put away their sins and correct their wrongs by humble confession, repentance, and humiliation, they choose their own way, and are given up to the same, and are finally led captive by Satan at his will.” 2 Testimonies 447.
“A revival of true godliness among us is the greatest and most urgent of all our needs. To seek this should be our first work. There must be earnest effort to obtain the blessing of the Lord...” Review and Herald 3-22-87. “Our churches are in need of a spiritual revival. Now is the time for the work of repentance and confession of sin to extend deeper. Now is the time for God's people to allow the Holy Spirit to make clean and thorough work, in order that all selfishness, all wrong, may be uprooted...” AU Gleaner 9-9-3.
“Revival and reformation are two different things. Revival signifies a renewal of spiritual life, a quickening of the powers of mind and heart, a resurrection from spiritual death. Reformation signifies a reorganization, a change in ideas and theories, habits and practices. Reformation will not bring forth the good fruit of righteousness unless it is connected with the revival of the Spirit. Revival and reformation are to do their appointed work, and in doing this work they must blend.” Review and Herald 2-25-2. “God calls for a revival and a reformation.” 14 Manuscript Releases 204. “God's people will not endure the test unless there is a revival and a reformation.” 7 Testimonies 285.
“I tell you that there must be a thorough revival among us. There must be a converted ministry. There must be confessions, repentance, and conversions.” LDE 189 “God calls for a higher devotion on the part of His people. There is need of a revival of the Holy Spirit in every place.” 13MR 409 “To our ministers, physicians, teachers, and all others engaged in any line of service for the Master, I have a message to bear. The Lord bids you to come up higher, to reach a holier standard. You must have an experience much deeper than you have yet even thought of having." 8 Testimonies 317
“The only hope for our people now is to take their stand on the true foundation. Higher and still higher they are to raise the banner of truth.” SpTBO6 44
“God calls for a thorough purification of households and institutions. There is need, not merely of a revival, but of a reformation. Every church needs to be stirred as never before." Review and Herald 7-15-2. “The Present Order of Things Must Change, or the wrath of God will fall upon his instrumentalities that are not working in Christ's lines." SpTA09 5 “God calls for a revival and a reformation...Let revival and reformation make constant changes. Something has been done in this line, but let not the work stop here. No! Let every yoke be broken.” 14 Manuscript Releases 204
“...the dearth of means shows that sin is upon the people...Where is the faith of the people of God? What are they doing? ...when the Lord sees that men and women are repentant and contrite of heart, that they are willing to be converted from their sins, God will work with them …” When the people will humble their hearts by repentance and confession to God and the forsaking of sins which have stirred the wrath of God against them, then the Lord will fulfill His word.” 21 Manuscript Releases 186.
Unless the church, which is now being leavened with her own backsliding, shall repent and be converted, she will eat of the fruit of her own doing, until she shall abhor herself. When she [the church] resists the evil and chooses the good, when she [the church] seeks God with all humility and reaches her high calling in Christ, standing on the platform of eternal truth and by faith laying hold upon the attainments prepared for her, she will be healed. She will appear in her God-given simplicity and purity, separate from earthly entanglements, showing that the truth has made her free indeed. Then her members will indeed be the chosen of God, His representatives. 8 Testimonies 250.

The words of God to ancient Israel have a solemn
Warning to the church and its leaders today....
Shall the warnings from God be passed by unheeded?...
Will they reject God's word as the Jewish leaders
rejected Christ? The result of Israel's sin is before us.
Will the church of today take warning?
